The boys of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have a reputation for creating an amazing live atmosphere full of strobe light overload, fuzzy guitars, and an almost vampiric stage presence. Sunday night’s show at The Vogue Theater in Broad Ripple lived up to all expectations. To paint a picture of their oh-so goth-façade, the three members of the band---guitarist Peter Hayes, bassist Robert Levon Been, and drummer Nick Jago---each swaggered onto a smoke-filled stage wearing all black clothing, and situated themselves in front of a giant skull and crossbones backdrop. The band pounded through an incredible set list that featured a perfect mix of each of their four albums. BRMC worked the enthusiastic crowd into a frenzy during songs like, “Six Barrel Shotgun” and “Whatever Happened to my Rock N’ Roll.” The crowd cried out for the songs they wanted to hear, and the band played nearly every request. Been and Hayes, whose vocal stylings are nearly identical, traded lead vocal duties throughout the show, while Jago kept his face hidden behind a mess of hair and thumped away at the drums. The show was a dizzying gospel-blues performance that had me believing the boys had been raised in the deep south and grown up with songs that sound just like “Shuffle Your Feet,” but to my surprise, they’re actually from San Francisco. The early part of the encore featured a solo acoustic performance by Peter Hayes that seemed to dull the energy created by the earlier part of the show. His performance was still an impressive, soulful one worth mentioning, but definitely not the high point of the night. The rest of the band joined him for the last few numbers, including “Red Eyes and Tears” and “In Like the Rose.” Together, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club enticed the crowd back into the sexy, dizzying, strobe-filled environment that they are so great at creating and finished up the show just like they started it.
