Journey back with us to those wild and wacky days of 1963 when America was just discovering The Beatles.

The following video is from CBS News and it seems to treat the early days of Beatlemania as if it was covering college students jamming themselves into phone booths or kids attempting to break hula-hoop endurance records. In other words, not very seriously. But who were they to know the world was about to change?

There are some interesting moments in the piece, such as when CBS reporter Alexander Kendrick is talking about the Fab Four’s fan club, and mentions that “some of the girls can write.” The reporter also describes the lads’ haircuts as “dish mop” and calls the entire Beatle craze a “sociological phenomena.”

Of course, there’s plenty of shots featuring screaming teenage girls.

And here’s a Beatle factoid you may not be aware of. The reporter also credits the band with “saving the sagging British corduroy industry.”

How much money were the lads making back then? According to the reporter, the band was making $5,000 per week in “one night stands.” Of course, that’s back in the early ‘60s when $5,000 was worth, well, at least $5,000.
