Posted on Tuesday June 30, 2009 at 06:01 PM 62 |

Big or small, stadium, arena, theatre or club – please take the time to drop a few remarks in the comment thread below telling us which show is your personal benchmark for comparing all other concerts between now and Jan. 1, 2010.

In case the ol’ memory vault’s a little rusty, here are a few photos depicting some of the more notable tours taking place during the first half of this year.

By far for me, the best show of the year so far is...Dave Matthews Band Live at Fenway Park in Boston.  Both nights were super!

Hands down, Paul McCartney at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas April 19, 2009.

Having seen McCartney 3 times before in venues that ranged from 60,000 seats to 20,000 seats, this was a blast. 4,000 of your friends is a small venue watching a two and half hour rock show that would blow anybody away. The man just knows how to have a good time. Others shows I've seen this year include Billy Joel/Ellton John and the Eagles. Both were incrediable shows but still feel a bit short of the masterpiece Paul McCartney performed that evening.

On a large scale - Paul McCartney @ Coachella was fantastic.  Followed closely by the Cure.

In a bar, The Hold Steady @ The Beauty Bar in Las Vegas.

The best?  ONE best?  Over the past 6 months I've seen the legendary and debonair Leonard Cohen mesmerize the audience at Red Rocks (best venue on the planet), The New Deal and Yacht Rock on the breathtaking Pool Deck on Jam Cruise, Thievery Corporation at the intimate and beautiful Belly Up in Aspen, Pretty Lights at the Fox Theatre (best club on the planet) and Bonnaroo, Animal Collective at the Boulder Theater, magicgravy at Desert Rocks (the best kept secret on the festival circuit), and Wilco, NIN, moe., David Byrne, MGMT, and tons more at Bonnaroo.

But all of these shows pale in comparison to seeing the best live Rock & Roll band of ALL TIME, Phish, reunite at the Hampton Col. on 3/6/9, only to trump themselves at Bonnaroo, performing "Mustang Sally", "Bobby Jean", and "Glory Days" with THE BOSS!  'Nuff said!!

It happened just a few days ago: David Byrne at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. It is evident that DB loves the Bay Area, and we definitely love him. He introduced the show as playing old and new stuff he and Brian Eno collaborated on, but he would "break the rules". The encore with non-Eno produced "Road To Nowhere" and "Burning Down the House" featuring SF's Extra Action Marching Band with hundreds of white balloons and balls dropping from the sky at the beginning of the latter song were all evident which rules were broken. The energy of all the musicians and the dancers was beyond magical. By far the best show I've seen this year, and will top the list of "all time" as well.

THE BEST damn concert of the year for me has been BY FAR The Airborne Toxic Event. This band is a MUST see for any avid concert go-er! They could play with flashlights shining on them and no speakers hooked up and the show would knock your socks off!! They are a wonderful band with such great music you don't know if to dance or cry or BOTH at the same time!! Check em' out they have quite the line up for this fall....if your looking to be entertained you will get it, if your soul searching come to the church of The Airborne Toxic Event and wash away your sins!!!

Coldplay, AT&T Center, San Antonio, June 10. I've seen many concerts, large and small, since my first (Culture Club--haha--in 1982), but this was without a doubt the best and most memorable (despite having quite a good beer buzz) concert that I've ever seen.

As always, in my estimation, the best live performance I've seen this year, was the Eagles at Hampton Coliseum in January (the 11th, I believe). This is the fifth time I've had the pleasure of seeing them live, the first being in 1978, and no one compares as far as faithfully, meticulously  presenting their music as it was recorded. Even a 3 hour show goes by too fast! I've seen everyone from The Who to Led Zeppelin to Clapton and Santana and Pearl Jam, but the Eagles still rank #1 in my book!

McCartney - sure, but with Ringo at Radio City Music Hall ("With A Little Help From My Friends" indeed).  I also have to say that would've been a great show even without them as Ben Harper & Eddie Vedder were great alone and together (especially on an epic cover of "Under Pressure").
